Corsets for Every Body: A Guide to Inclusive Fit and Sizing

One of the most persistent myths about corsets is that they're only for one type of body — usually the mannequin-shaped ideal you see on magazine covers. In reality, corsets have been worn by every kind of body throughout history, and modern handmade corsets are more inclusive than ever.

At PopJoy, we sew our reversible corsets in a wide range of sizes and designs precisely because there is no "standard" body. Here's what inclusive corset fitting actually looks like.

Why the "Corset Body" Myth Persists

Fashion advertising has spent decades showing corsets on a very narrow range of bodies. That's a marketing choice, not a design reality. Corsets — especially modern outerwear corsets — are geometry, not idealization. A well-made corset works because the pattern, panels, and seams follow the wearer's actual shape. That means the same style of corset can look beautiful on very different bodies.

The problem isn't corsets. It's the imagery around them.

PopJoy's Size Range

Our reversible corset tops are made from XXS to XXL. That covers a genuinely wide range of body types — not because we picked "inclusive" as a marketing angle, but because our customers come in every shape and we want them to actually be able to wear our work.

You can see the size chart on every product page. If you're not sure about measurements, our size guide post walks you through measuring yourself in under 5 minutes.

Corset Fit by Body Shape

Different bodies pair beautifully with different corset styles. Some general guidance:

Bustier Shapes

Look for corsets with slightly higher necklines or supportive under-bust construction. Our corsets have shaped cups and structured seaming that create lift without being uncomfortable.

Straighter/Boyish Shapes

Corsets can create beautiful curves where they don't naturally exist. Look for pieces with strong waist definition — our reversible tops have gentle-but-defined shaping that gives the illusion of an hourglass without demanding it.

Curvier/Fuller Shapes

The key is choosing sizes that skim rather than compress. A corset should feel like a hug, not a squeeze. If you're between two sizes, always go up — a slightly looser corset in the right shape looks better than a tight corset in the wrong size.

Short Torsos

Look for corsets that hit at or just above the natural waist rather than very long styles. Our reversible tops sit at a flattering mid-length, which works well for shorter torsos without swallowing the frame.

Long Torsos

Longer corset styles can be gorgeous on long torsos, elongating the line without cropping awkwardly. Message us if you want recommendations for our styles that suit longer proportions.

What "Right Fit" Actually Feels Like

A well-fitting corset should:

  • Sit smoothly against your body without gapping or bunching
  • Feel supportive but never restrictive — you should breathe fully
  • Stay in place when you move (no riding up, no falling down)
  • Look flattering from every angle, including sitting down

If your corset doesn't do all of those things, the fit is wrong — and the corset is not the problem. Either the size is off or the style isn't right for your body. Both are fixable.

Why We Work in Ranges, Not Ideals

Everything we make is designed with real bodies in mind, not idealized silhouettes. Our fit models come in different sizes. Our fabric choices are chosen for how they drape on real curves, not how they look on a display mannequin. And every piece is checked by hand before it ships — because sizing charts are a starting point, not the whole story.

Common Fit Questions from Real Customers

"Do you have plus sizes?" Yes. Our sizing goes up to XXL, and if we don't have exactly what you need in Ready-to-Ship, we can make a custom Made-to-Order piece in our extended range.

"I'm very petite. Will your smallest size fit?" XXS fits most petite frames. If you're smaller than that, we can also do custom pieces — contact us.

"Are your corsets designed for a specific body type?" No. They're designed for the person who wants to wear them. The construction adapts to the person.

Shopping With Confidence

If you're worried about fit before buying, our Ready-to-Ship pieces are the easiest place to start — you can try one and know within an hour whether the fit works for you. And if it doesn't, our return policy covers unworn pieces within 30 days.

You can also come see us in person at our Cikalo pickup point or at pop-up markets around Finland, where you can try things on before buying.

Corsets have never been for one body. They've always been for the body of the person wearing them — yours, whatever shape that is.
