The Complete Corset Size Guide: How to Measure and Find Your Perfect Fit

PopJoy corset size guide — how to measure and find your perfect fit

Choosing the right corset size can feel intimidating — especially when you're shopping online and can't try one on. At PopJoy, we design our reversible corset tops to flatter a range of shapes, but the perfect fit still starts with two things: knowing your measurements and understanding how corsets are meant to sit on your body.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know before ordering your next handmade corset from our Helsinki atelier.

Why Corset Sizing Is Different from Regular Clothing

Corsets aren't like ordinary tops. They're constructed with structured seams, reinforced panels, and specific shaping that hugs your torso in a very particular way. That means the sizing chart you're used to from fast fashion brands won't translate — a "small" in one store might be an "extra small" or a "medium" in the corset world.

The good news? Once you have your measurements right, you'll know your PopJoy size for life. Handmade corsets are built to last for years, so this small investment of time pays off every single wear.

What You'll Need to Measure Yourself

Just three things: a soft measuring tape (the flexible fabric kind, not a rigid one), a mirror, and about five minutes. It also helps to wear a form-fitting tank or bralette so you're measuring your natural shape and not the bulk of a thick sweater.

The Three Key Measurements

1. Bust

Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust — usually right across the nipple line. Keep the tape horizontal (a mirror helps here) and don't pull tight. It should be snug but not compressing.

2. Natural Waist

Your natural waist is the narrowest point of your torso, usually about an inch above your belly button. If you're not sure where it is, bend to one side — the crease is your natural waist. Measure snug, but don't hold your breath or suck in.

3. Underbust (bonus, for corset accuracy)

Wrap the tape directly under your bust, where a bra band would sit. This measurement helps us understand how the corset will sit under your chest — especially important for reversible tops that need to lay flat on both sides.

The PopJoy Sizing Chart

Our reversible corset tops come in sizes XXS – XXL, and each size is designed as a range rather than a single number. That means our corsets accommodate the natural variation in real bodies — you don't have to fit perfectly, you have to fit comfortably.

You can see the full size chart on any product page in our Reversible Corset collection. If your measurements sit between two sizes, we always recommend going with the larger — our tops are meant to be snug, not restrictive.

What to Do If You're Between Sizes

This happens a lot, and it's normal. Bodies aren't standardized, and no chart will fit every shape perfectly. Here's what we tell customers who write us:

  • If you carry more in the bust: Size up. A corset that's tight on the chest is uncomfortable within an hour.
  • If your waist and hips are on opposite ends of the chart: Choose based on your waist — corsets shape around the waist first.
  • Still unsure? Contact us at our Contact page, share your measurements, and we'll recommend the size we've fit hundreds of customers into.

A note on our construction: Unlike traditional corsets that use boning (thin plastic or steel strips inside the seams), our reversible corset tops are shaped entirely through precise seaming and reinforced panels. That means the fit is more forgiving and comfortable — but you still get the beautiful structured silhouette.

Prefer a truly custom fit? At checkout, use the Order Note field in your cart to share your exact bust and waist measurements. You can also tell us if you'd like a specific fabric combination — or a different fabric on one side of your reversible corset. The more detail you share about your body and preferences, the better we can craft the piece for you.

Reversible Fit vs. Traditional Corset Fit

Our reversible corsets are designed to look and feel flattering on both sides, which means the construction is more delicate than a traditional corset. Rather than the aggressive waist reduction of a Victorian-style corset, ours are structured tops that follow your natural shape while adding gentle definition. Think "flattering silhouette" rather than "waist training."

This also means our corsets are comfortable enough to wear for hours — dinner, dancing, a full workday. They're meant to become a wardrobe staple, not a special-occasion-only piece.
